The dynamic and often intense relationship that exists between sisters is brought to the fore in this gripping tale with the story being told from both Louise and Alice’s viewpoint, in different timelines. It begins with what 11-year old Archie (Louise’s son) witnessed 18-months earlier, who has been viciously sworn to secrecy. The sisters were raised in a home where they witnessed their mother suffer abuse at the hands of their controlling father. His death was a huge relief to their mother but his absence does not improve the jealousy that exists between the sisters. If anything, the money they inherit complicates matters and when Louise parts with her's foolishly, the money that their mother will leave on her death becomes of utmost importance to her. Her poor choices result in her son Archie having to keep burdensome secrets.
As it turns out, it is not just little Archie that is keeping secrets. Others in this intriguing story have things to hide as well. The question as to how they are connected makes for a gripping read and a link I particularly enjoyed was Alice sitting by the window and watching the tram go by outside. Every morning she sees the same man in the same seat in the same car. He is handsome and she finds she looks forward to seeing him. When he looks up and waves one morning, she thinks he is waving to her. His role in the story is clever and well thought out.
There are so many good things to say about this book; it was enthralling a definite page-turner.

The Secret An absolutely gripping psychological thriller eBook KL Slater Reviews
This is a story about 2 sisters. One sister appears to be successful and the other...well she seems to have some issues but it gets really interesting. You will want to keep reading because the story will just pull you in and you don't want to take a break. Thoroughly captivating, I kid you not. I love ALL of K.L. Slater's books. Enjoy!
This novel starts with alternating chapters devoted to the main characters Louise, her nine year old son- Alex , and Alice. As each chapter progresses, the character's present situation and a glimpse of the past is revealed. This method became a bit tedious, as though the story line could not account for each character's history without the sometimes cumbersome flash backs. About midway through things begin to pick up as Alice, a thirty year old who had rather given up on life, becomes intrigued by a man she sees waving on a commuter bus, and begins to take steps to re-enter the world, going so far as to follow her mystery man into a coffee shop, sharing the same table with him. Meanwhile sister Louise, who has a put down for Alice at every visit, deposits her son- often with little notice- at Auntie Alice's home. Spouse's hubby comes to pick Archie up one day, spinning the tail of Louise's many faults! The novel becomes more and more complicated as more characters and their foibles are introduced. Readers almost need to keep a running tally of who knows whom and who did what to whom.
None of the characters were likable, Alice came off as a stalker as well as a weak person. Louise was just an unpleasant person, totally self absorbed and Alice continued to give her the benefit of the doubt? Not very believable. The story itself wasn't even very gripping - I would forget I was reading it for days at a time.
I enjoyed reading this, in my opinion it's better than her novel Liar. This is a great story and l loved the twist, but the ending fell flat to me. I would have liked to read about what transpired next with Archie and Louise, which is why I rated it at 4 and not 5.It's a good solid read and l will definitely read more of this author's novels.
This book was very good. It involves secrets kept and the pain they cause others. The sisters in this story are different as night and day yet are both haunted by their childhood and past relationships. This book has a twist that I did not see coming at the end and to me quite shocking. If you enjoy thrillers as much as I do, this book is a must read.
I’ve read every book Ms Slater has published and they’re all gripping and entertaining. This one is no exception.
I think K.L. is one of the best at flashbacks in plots. She doesn’t drag them out, they flow very organically with current happenings, and they’re added to enhance the story, not overpower it.
I really liked the main character, she felt very real. And I liked the evolution of her relationship with her nephew.
Great story — A page-turner, suspenseful, and lots of surprises. K.L. is so good at giving you just enough info to think you can predict what’s to come, but it’s usually not what you anticipated.
My only complaint is not knowing what happened to one of the minor characters (I won’t say who, don’t want to spoil it).
I highly recommend!
This is not an "absolutely gripping psychological Thriller". It was slow going at first and seemed like a soap opera about battling siblings with all of the flashbacks. The ending was a surprise, but too long in coming.
