The Daughter by Lucy Dawson is described as a gripping psychological thriller and in part this is true. Either I'm reading too many such books, which helps me figure out what's going on, long before the twist is revealed or the twist isn't that hard to figure out. Either way, the book gets 6.5/10 from me. What the book does well is recount how easily a life can unravel when one lies, and how perceptive children are, even when we as adults think they're too young to understand.

I liked this book as it kept me interested. It seemed a bit drawn out but otherwise we'll written and edited.
Good plot and characterization. Had me in tears at times. Enjoyed the way the ending really wrapped everything up.

It's my first review 😱 Yep. Something inside me just forced my hand. English is not my first language and am not that good at expressing myself in English so forgive me.

I have to say that I couldn't put this book down. Me loves a good family drama, thriller, one event that could and would change your life forever. Love to read about the aftermath of loss, how people handle their feelings etc.
However I feel after (as it's also my first book by Lucy) reading the synopses of her books that she writes about things am not comfortable with. Having lovers, making mistakes that destroy everybody else's lives.

Take Jess for example. I get it. She was young, didn't know that "the love of her life" was married. Then she thought it good idea to save her little pure soul and let her husband think their daughter is his. What kind of person does that?
Really, tried to keep open mind and the book really had the suspense and that was about the only thing that kept me reading. The characters? Not so much.
I feel like the only characters to feel for were Ben, his mother and maybe Jess's father.
I haven't read a book that shakes me so badly for quite long.

When the bad things started to happen 17 years later, I have to confess I didn't feel sorry for Jess. Not one bit. Ofc I did for her kid. But I feel that everything that happened she deserved. Not the death of Beth years ago...But the scare.

She continues to pine after Simon, it's clear. And who made her to be with Ben for years? Playing happy family with the man she didn't even love? Ofc when the tragedy strikes she can't tell the truth.
That's the only positive act she does through the book - leaving to not hurt Ben. And later taking care of Sandrine. That redeemed Jess but not completely, far from it.
Gosh, being married again 17 years later! she still can't let go of what-ifs. Wondering what her life could have been with Simon. She just keeps flying to the flame like a moth like she said herself. I believe that she wanted the best for Cara, but she did the same she did all those years ago. She just had to pay Simon more attention. As always. It's only down to luck that this time tragedy didn't strike because of her having eyes only for Simon. Ofc she said she was over it this time. Which makes me feel even worse for Ben. He thought he had a happy life, lovely kid,later he grieved, he believed they were in this together. We never plan for little white lies to turn take for worse.

I know -the first love, hurt feelings, yada-yada-yada, but still thinking what could have been.. Now having happy life once again. Really happy unlike with Ben...
And at the end..saying she can't lie for Simon?! When all she has done, is lie, lie and lie. To the only man who is worth only the best - Ben..It's unbelievably cruel, heartless, selfish and other things. But that's the thing with good guys and bad guys. People always want the excitement and the good ones always get burnt. It literally made me cry.
Yes, she didn't plan to meet Simon and his wife all those times. But to be so blind to not see Simon only cared about his wants and reputation, not even his other daughter..It didn't bring Jess down to Earth?! What kind of person you have to be to be so completely blind, deaf and just ignorant?! To be honest she and Simon totally deserved each other. Well, the Ed guy is ok, too. Seems prone to violence etc. Thank god, Ben got rid of her.

Don't even start me on Simon. Man with no morals, crazy stalker, no-good guy having his cake and eating it,too. Guy who can just stand up and leave like he didn't have family, little daughter..It's disgusting. Real love my a**

And what's always the thing with adultery - they think they are the suffering ones.
I don't say I support Simon's wife or Natalia about what they did but I certainly understand them. Wife the most. But why the cheater doesn't get more blame is because women (usually) are so desperately clinging to their idea of perfect husband they would do everything in their power to keep him even when they see the proofs about that not being the case. But protecting your family I get.
I think it's good suspense book and am saying it from the bottom of my heart!! with few morals, bad coincidences or supernatural things or whatever the three knocks and woman on bike years ago were about. Were they real? Don't know and don't care.

I'd really read another book by Lucy, but I can't suffer through another main "heroine" being lower than low, making stupid choices, being unhappy and dissatisfied with everything she has and destroying people who don't deserve to have their happy life taken and illusions shattered.

Also this book teaches how one lie, one act, can have consequences that you can't imagine to predict. And also you ahould always trust the signs,even to be on the safe side. Better be safe than sorry. I don't really believe in supenatural but I do think people have the sixth and seventh and..mind, gut feeling, whatever you wanna call it, there are signs what may or may not warn us. And there are certainly events in life - in ours or other people's - to learn from.

This is what can happen when cheating happens. Jess was 19 years old when she met a man that swept her off her feet. They were just starting their relationship when she finds him with his pregnant wife. That was the end. Fast forward five years later and she goes to enroll her daughter in school and finds him again. He is the principal of the school. what cannot be denied is how much her daughter resembles him. He confronts her and in comes his wife and learns about the affair. Later on that day her daughter is playing outside and falls of a toy and dies instantly. Fast forward 17 years later and someone doesn't want her to forget about her daughter.
First book I've read by this author and won't be the last. Book starts for a few chapters then goes to 17 years in the future. There was a lot of twist and turns. For me, the ending was shocking. It's a book that you should read. Also shows you that lies can hurt.
I know that it says right in the title that it's a gripping psychological thriller, but it really is. Love Ms. Dawson's works. Whatever the problem is with not carrying all of her books needs to be resolved, hopefully to Ms. Dawson's benefits. We need to incent her to write more, not prevent her works from getting out to her adoring readers.
Lucy Dawson did it again. She grabbed me at the beginning, kept me reading and thinking about her characters, and surprised me at the end when she got to the "who dunnit." But wait, there's more. I think I may be a slow reader. It takes me several days to finish a book. My problem is Dawson won't let go of me. She keeps me thinking about her characters and plot twists even when I'm nowhere near the book.She's that good a writer. Another great read.
Jessica Davies' life looked picture perfect from the outside. She and her high school love, Ben, were now married with a beautiful 5 year old daughter, Beth. When Beth is killed when she falls from a piece of playground equipment, Jessica's world is shattered. To complicate matters more, Simon, a man Jessica had a brief relationship with, believes that he was Beth's biological father; his angry wife threatens to tell Ben everything unless Jessica tells Simon she never loved him and Beth was not his daughter and leaves town immediately.

Fast forward 17 years, and Jessica is remarried with a 2 year old son, James. Ben still sends her a white rose each year on the anniversary of Beth's passing. A chance meeting with Simon's estranged wife seems to open up old wounds , and strange and unexplained things begin to happen in Jessica's home. Is Simon's wife trying to get even with her? Is something more sinister going on? I don't want to give away the twists and turns of this story; it would spoil all the fun!
