I liked the book, and the characters were interesting. The main character, Anne, is probably the most intelligent women in a book that I've come across. She and the other characters make the right decisions throughout the book, and everything seems to go their way. Which is why the book started to bore me in the end - in fact, there was no real conflict - just the Black Death, which wasn't even a threat to the characters in this book because they are surrounded by a moat - (although rats are good swimmers and fleas don't die in water, but hey, it's fiction). The 'bad guys' are easily defeated, the good guys are smart, clean, and nice. And there is a sequel - it ends with "To be continued." I like Minette Walters, and really love her writing and other books. This was a deception, but I will probably get the sequel to see what happens.Tags : The Last Hours [Walters Minette] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Walters Minette,The Last Hours,Allen & Unwin,1760294985

Although I am a Walters fan, I am luke-warm about her foray into historical fiction.
Very good detailed description as to the structure and operation of a small community in the 1350,s, especially when faced with a treat such as the plague. I was not aware of how poorly educated the overall community was and how badly they where prepared to deal with anything outside of basic survival.
Please hurry with the sequel, Ms. Walters. I am thoroughly invested in these diverse characters and their story which is so rich in nuance and detail. Fans of historical fiction, this is possibly our Holy Grail.
A very different offering from Minette Walters. This historical novel about the effects of the plague in 1348 England is a fascinating read. The amount of research that must have gone into the writing of this book is phenomenal. The characters are extremely well drawn and the story is compelling.
You name it, it boils down to a great read. As a novel, character profiles are clearly threaded together into a tapestry of roles that make the reader care. And as a historical piece, it captures the nuances that 14th century Dorsetshire conjures and more. Minette Walters is truly masterful at her craft. The topics resonate in today's world. Highly recommended,
Minette Walters brings her fantastic talent for immersing the reader in the psychological and social world to bear on the events and changes that the black plague brought to feudal Britain. This is a great read and I'm so looking forward to reading the next part of the story. The characters are deeply imagined and the reader looks on as they struggle to discover what exists outside the small world of their demense. This is a tale of breaking out of the brutality of feudalism. Out shows us how a little learning and intelligence can help people break out and control those who cruelly dominated them. It looks unflinching at the mistreatment of women in that time. It's also a study of young men finding their way in the world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a beautifully drawn story illuminating a time that we may not understand very clearly.
Loved this book. Excellent read. Seemed away from her usual areas of writing. I did not want this to end. I then looked for another, or a sequel, or a prequel or an anyquel. So disappointed. I was INVESTED in those characters.
