The three main characters were women. All three strong in their own right. The sadness, strength and even valor was sucking you into their life's story. I truly loved it and could not put it down. At first I thought not another titanic book...this was different and wonderful.Tags : On a Cold Dark Sea - Kindle edition by Elizabeth Blackwell. On a Cold Dark Sea edition by Elizabeth Blackwell Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I have read many books about the Titanic but this book really touched me. The characters were very real to me and I found myself rooting for them, urging them on to survive. And after many years finally sharing their stories and secrets with one and other.
I gave this 5 stars, because the author drew me in to the stories of some of the survivors. I felt as though I was in the lifeboat with them.I didn't want this book to end.
I have really enjoyed this book and will miss the characters. The author writes with ease and it is the perfect little escape into a beautiful but tragic time in history. It brought me to places and situations I haven't previously considered (like the aftermath once the Carpathia docked in New York) even after knowing a lot about the history of the iconic ships sinking. I would highly recommend this book and I already plan on passing it along to my mom to read. This would make a great gift for a historical fiction reader with a strong female lead. Enjoy!
I enjoyed this historically accurate and imaginative fictional
account of survivors of the Titanic . No earth shattering twists or revelations here, just a story of what life might have been like had you been witness to this horrible event and lived to tell about it. Four very different passengers with four different back stories and four very different outcomes, but their lives were forever linked and altered in good and bad ways by fate and the choices they made on that terrible night. I enjoyed this book but it seemed to end abruptly with no real resolution. Maybe that's how the author wanted it to end, much like the voyage of the Titanic.
Ok, Elizabeth Blackwell can write, and she can write well. However, I really was let down by this novel. Such a great premise, but with a very lackluster climax that only hits at the end of the book. The three women Anna, Esme, and Charlotte are really all defined by the men in their lives and make believable decisions, and spend the book regretting some of their decisions, but I feel like the author glossed over them. In fact, I feel that she glossed over pretty much every emotion in the book. Yes, at those times, it was all "stuff upper lip," but that doesn't mean they were devoid of any emotions inside. The characters go through a huge trauma as smoothly as if they witnessed a toddler falling on his bum. Good writing, but overall pretty flat.
From the first page to the last page the story of these three girls was so interesting and the men they married and loved. The author makes all her hereos so beleivable. There were alor of titanic books and a movie but I truly enjoyed this book. I will defintely read this author again.
This was such an interesting take on the Titanic sinking. It was different than many other Titanic novels not only in the characters it focused on, but in the actual style of writing. Blackwell focused more on the aftermath of the disaster, and the effect that night had on the main characters, rather than their time on the ship itself.
I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys character driven stories and/or the Titanic.
